8-9 February Conference: Knowledge for our common future

— Norwegian Universities and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Date and place: 8 and 9th of February 2018, at the University of Bergen

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represents a tremendous challenge to knowledge. Most of the 17 goals appeals to the need for new research. The goals, it is argued, can only be realized through a close link between "knowledge and politics".

When the University of Bergen now tries to gather the higher education sector in Norway for a conference on the SDG, the purpose is to make the universities a relevant actor in the ongoing debate about and implementations of the SDGs.

We want to show where we already have types of best practice that can contribute to the realization of the SDGs and be an inspiration to other universities, whether it be in teaching, research or mediation of knowledge to society.

But the SDGs also provides an opportunity. Universities need to change curriculum and teaching, to interact better with the rest of the educational system, and mediate to society relevant knowledge about the SDGs.

At the conference in Bergen we hope to create a space for broad participation in a debate about how universities may become important actors in the implementation of the SDGs at home, but also, perhaps most importantly, globally.

We hope information about this conference can be spread around at your institution and dates noted.
